The areas of instruction, evaluation and testing will include but not limited to the following subjects:

  • Human resource
  • Well Control Procedures and Responsibilities
  • Pressure Regimes – Subnormal, Normal and Abnormal
  • Primary Well Control
  • Formation Fracture Pressure – LOT/FIT, MAASP (static & dynamic), MAMW.
  • SCR’s & CLFL’s
  • Annular Pressure Losses / ECD
  • Top Hole Drilling/ Shallow Gas/ Diverting/ Riserless Drilling
  • Causes of Kicks.
  • Kick Indicators and Warning Signs
  • Gas Behavior – Circulating, Migration & Solubility
  • Running Casing and Liner
  • Secondary Well Control, Shut–in Procedures API RP59 and Company.
  • Permeability & Porosity
  • Kill Methods – Driller’s, Weight & Wait and Volumetric
  • Well Control Problems
  • Impermeable Gas Cap
  • Riser Margin, Riser Collapse, Overburden Stress Gradient
  • Accumulator Unit – Components/Function/API RP 53
  • Annular Preventers – Components / Function

Course Objectives and Learning Outcomes: Participants should be able upon completion of the course:

  • Demonstrate the important of Well control in oil & gas industry and the needle of the course
  • Calculate well control formula’s as set out by the IWCF certification standards.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of well control principles and procedures.
  • Demonstrate the ability to circulate the influx out of the well bore while maintaining a constant BHP.
  • Complete and interpret a kill sheet.
  • Identify components of BOP equipment, accumulator equipment, related instrumentation and their function.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of well control through exercises and testing.
  • Pass all parts of the IWCF Examinations with a minimum 70% pass mark.

Participants:

The course is intended for training personnel in the following positions:

  • Assistant Drillers, Driller, Equivalent positions in well servicing
  • Drilling Supervisor, Superintendent or Company Man, Office based Drilling Supervisor, Office based Drilling Superintendent, Tool Pusher, Offshore Installation Manager (OIM), Drilling Contractor Rig Manager, Super-visors or Crew Chiefs for special service operations.
